Logbook from 18 March 2006 to 15 May 2007
21 mar 2006
- PF arrived in Madison in the evening of 18 March. Started the discussion on the coming measurements on 20 March.
- Prepared the Be foils for SXR1, SXR3 and SXR4, to be installed in the probes in order to set the SXR tomography in the doubel-filter configuration.
- The two new 31x51 mm foils, 75 microns (nominal thickness) have been cut in 20 9.5x15.5 mm small filters. Each foil has been mounted on a spare SXR flange, but three foils have been broken. Tried also to install 8 foils in the SXR flange: ok. The curved frame remains well above the usual position (when a thinner foil is installed), a careful check for any stray light should be made.
- All foils should be measured, one by one.
22 mar 2006
- SXR1, SXR3 and SXR4 probes disconnected from MST and valves rough pumped. Also disconnected the SXR1 and SXR2 iso-amps boxes.
- Dividers for diodes 5...16 of iso-amps of SXR1 and SXR2 removed. All positions of the knobs of the iso-amps have been marked in order to speed up the selection of the gains. Also, all knobs have been checked and tightened.
- Measured all the 17 new filters: 12 are 78 um, 3 are 79 um and 2 are 80 um; used 1 um resolution micrometer of BEC.
- Installed new filters on the probes:
- SXR1 has a 303 um filter, made up of four foils, 85+79+80+59 (in that order, 85 is the first foil, 59 has been installed as the last one). 80 is one of the new foils;
- SXR3 has a 761 um filter, made up of 10 foils, 9x78+59 (in that order, 59 is the last installed foil). The 78 um foils are new ones;
- SXR4 has a 761 um filter, made up of 10 foils, 81+3x79+3x78+70+59+80 (in that order, 80 is the last installed foil and is a little bit shorter than the others). The 78,79 and 80 foils are the new ones.
- Photos of the SXR3 and SXR4 front flanges are available.
- All diodes of the three probes have been checked with a 1kHz red led and a TLA @ 1e5: all channels ok.
- Test of stray light with a 100W lamp and diodes 1,10 and 20, TLA @ 1e7: ok.
- The SXR1, SXR3 and SXR4 probes have been installed on MST and rough pumped. VAT valves are closed.
23 mar 2006
- Iso-amp boxes of SXR1 and SXR2 installed back and all cables connected. A few labels on these cables have been made.
- VAT valves of SXR1, SXR3 and SXR4 opened and then cracked.
- Dummy shots to check electronics:
- 1060323003...005: all channels @ 5e7. D20,SXR1 noisy; SXR2 noisy on all diodes; D13,D16...20,SXR3 saturated; D5,SXR4 saturated.
- Checked power supply of SXR2 iso-amps and power cable disconnected and connected. After that SXR2 iso-amps blowed up. SXR2 iso-amp box disconnected again. A condenser of iso-amp D3 exploded. Condenser replaced and all iso-amps checked: all were ok. Iso-amp box reinstalled. Other dummy shots have been taken:
- 006...009: SXR2 iso-amps are off. All diodes of SXR3 and SXR4 are working now, except D13,SXR3 (saturated) and encoder of D20,SXR3
- 010: SXR2 iso-amps on but noise still there. The fuse of SXR1 iso-amps power supply has been used
- 011: SXR1 and SXR2 iso-amps powered with their own power supplies, but the fuse of SXR4 has been used in SXR2 power supply. Also, all channels of SXR2 have 5e6 gain. Noise seems disappeared but it is still there (smaller)
- 012...028: shots with plasma.
24 mar 2006
- New fuse installed on SXR iso-amp power supply. It's a slow-burn 230V 1A.
- The 10kohm resistor on D5,SXR4 pot on iso-amp has been soldered, it was disonnected and this was why that channel did not worked.
- Test shots with all same gains on all channels:
- 1060324001: SXR1 all 5e7 and all ok, SXR2 all 5e6 but D8...16 are noisy, SXR3 all 5e7 and all ok except D13 saturated and encoder of D20 not working correctly, SXR4 all 5e7 and all ok except D19 noisy and with a 2V offset. All other encoders, including those of SXR2, are working
- 002: all channels @ 5e7. SXR1 all ok, SXR2 noisy, SXR3 all ok but D13 is saturated and encoder of D20 not working, SXR4 now are all ok. All other encoders, including those of SXR2, are working
- 003: no SXR data (tree off on pulsefile)
- 004: all channels @ 2e7. SXR1 ok, SXR2 noisy, SXR3 ok but D13 is noisy and D20 encoder not working, SXR4 ok. All other encoders, including those of SXR2, are working
- 005: all @ 1e7. Same as shot 004. D20,SXR1 again noisy. All other encoders, including those of SXR2, are working
- 006: all @ 1e6. Same as shot 004. SXR2 signals less noisy but due to the lower gain on the TLAs. All encoders are ok except D13,20,SXR3
- 007: all @ 2e6. Same as shot 004. SXR2 signals less noisy but due to the lower gain on the TLAs. All encoders are ok except D13,20,SXR3
- 008: all @ 5e6. Same as shot 004. SXR2 signals less noisy but due to the lower gain on the TLAs. All encoders are ok except D13,20,SXR3
- 009: all @ 5e7. Lemo connectors of diodes 20,SXR1 and 13,20,SXR3 disconnected and connected again but nothing changes with respect of shot 002
- 010: SXR2 iso-amps with power supply of D9...20,SXR1 iso-amps and viceversa. Noise still on SXR2 data, it is not the power supply of the iso-amps
- 011: power supplies of SXR1 and SXR2 iso-amps restored. Disconnected output cable from encoding system for D20,SXR2. The encoder pulse disappeared from D20 but the noise is still there
- 012: output cable from encoding system for D20,SXR2 connected back and disconnected the twinax BNC (input cable of encoding system) of D1,SXR2. Noise disappeared.
- 013: Twinax BNC input cable of encoding system of D1,SXR2 connected back, noise still there.
- It seems like this noise comes from the encoding system
- For shots 078 and 079 the TLA of D1,SXR2 has a single +/-15V power supply. Noise still there, it is not the power supply of SXR2 TLAs.
- From shot 080 the encoder and power supply of SXR2 has been disconnected. SXR2 signals not available from this shot.
- The encoding system of SXR2 has been tested on the bench with a spare TLA. The same noise can be obtained for all channels and for all gains of the TLA (1e5, 1e6 and 1e7). For lower gains the noise is smaller but still visible.
- The encoder board ground and the common "0" of the power supply are connected together but are isolated from the box. If this ground is connected to the box the noise on the signals disappears. The gound of this encoding system and that of the other encodings should be compared.
27 mar 2006
- The SXR2 encoder board was not grounded, and that causes the higher noise in the signals. The board has been grounded using one metal screws to attach it to the box. Now noise is very similar to that of other probes. Added also two 4700uF 25V on the +/- 15V power supplies in order to avoid the saturation of the TLA when the encoder and p.s is switched on.
- SXR2 encoder and p.s. of TLA installed in the rack but cables have not been connected.
- SXR3 encoder and p.s. of TLA disconnected from the rack. All encoders are working fine, including those of D13 and D20 (which did not worked in the test shots of the previous days). For this box the encoder board is grounded to the box through the output BNCs of the encoding system, but the "0" of the +/- 15V is not grounded (that will be grounded through the TLA). This is correct, and maybe the same ground layout should be used also for the SXR2 encoder box.
- Added two 4700uF 25V also on the +/- 15V power supplies of the TLA of SXR3 in order to avoid the saturation of the TLA when the encoder and p.s is switched on (the same problem of SXR2 has been found also for SXR3).
- The SXR3 iso-amp box should be better fixed in the rack.
- Test shot with SXR1 and SXR4 valves open (but probes extracted): 1060327018.
28 mar 2006
- A small leak has been found on SXR1. The VAT valve has been closed. Tomorrow a leak test will be made.
29 mar 2006
- SXR1 leak tested. Found three "bloody" Fischer feedthrough. Probe removed from MST and feedthrough replaced; they are those of diodes 4, 5 and 8. No more feedthrough available. Probe tested again: no leaks found. Leak rate was between 5.6e-9 and 1.4e-8 mbar l/s. On the leak test before replacing the feedthrough LR was high up to 1e-5 mbar l/s.
- Added a led inside the SXR1 probe, close to the array of diodes. With 2 Vpp and an offset of 1.5 V the led is bright enough to illuminate all diodes. Gain should be set to 1e6 and 1e7 for central channels. This led can be used to test all electronics without removing the probe.
- SXR1 probe installed on MST. Pressures ok, valve opened and the "cracked" after two hours of rough pumping. Test shots: 1060329009 and 010; probe extracted, valves closed, all channels set to 5e7. SXR2 and SXR3 electronics not yet installed.
30 mar 2006
- Worked on SXR2 and SXR3 encoders. The SXR3 one had the board isolated from the "0" of the +/- 15V only because of bad soldering! Actually all encoders, including those of SXR1 and SXR4, are the same: the board ground is connected to the common point of the power supply and is grounded on the box through screws or the output BNC of the encoders. cheaters are to be used for all of them. Checked again all channels and all are working fine.
- Repaired the SXR3 isoamp box. Checked all channels: D20 had one of the internal dip-switch on, that is why that signal was bad. All modules are working.
- All electronics and cables connected back. Test shots:
- 1060330015, all @ 5e7, all ok
- 016, all @2e7, all ok but D11,SXR2, which shows the encoding pulse of 1e7
- 017, all @ 1e7, all ok
- 018, all 1e6, all ok
- 019, all 2e6, all ok but D11,SXR2 which shows the encoding pulse of 1e6
- 020, all 5e6, all ok
- After that shot the SXR tomography pulsefile has been switched off.
31 mar 2006
- 1060331001 to 035 are dummy shots for checking D1,SXR2. From the tests the 2x gain of the iso-amp is not working. Thus input and output cables of iso-amps D1 and D11 have been switched. D1 of the probes (and D20) sometimes is not usable because of the blind diodes next to them. Here are the shots:
- 001...003: all channels of SXR2 @ 1e6. Function generator connected to input of TLA D11,SXR2. Triangular shape, 2Vpp, 1kHz. When gain is 2x the amplitude does not change, and the 1x gain is really set. 5x is fine
- 004: changed input amplitude but too high for 5x gain
- 005...007: changed input amplitude and switched to sinusoidal. Now D11,SXR2 is ok with 5x
- 008...011: function generator disconnected and cable from diode 11 connected back to the input of TLA D11,SXR2. Tested again the 1x, 2x and 5x. After shot 010 the SXR2 iso-amp box has been opened and all modules have been checked: all ok, no dip-switched pressed, but in shot 011 the 2x gain still does not work
- input and output cables of iso-amps D1 and D11 have been switched
- 012,013: test shot with switched cables, now D11,SXR2 works and D1 has the non-working iso-amp
- In the following dummy shots all gain setting have been checked
- 014: all diodes of all probes @ 2e6. All ok but encoders of D1,SXR2 and, strange, of D19,SXR3
- 015: all channels @ 1e6. All ok
- 016,017: all channels @ 5e6. All ok
- 018: all channels @ 5e5. All ok
- 019: all channels @ 2e5. All ok but encoders of D1,SXR2 and D19,SXR3
- 020: all channels @ 1e5. All ok
- 021: all channels @ 1e7. All ok
- 022: all channels @ 2e7. All ok but encoders of D1,SXR2. D19,SXR3 seems fine
- 023: all channels @ 5e7. All ok
- 024: SXR1,SXR2,SXR4 @ 5e7, SXR3 @ 2e7. All ok, including D19,SXR3. Actually, the voltage pulse in D19,SXR3 is sligthly different than the others of the same probe
- Connected function generator to input of TLA D19,SXR3, 1.15Vpp, 1kHz. SXR1,2,4 @ 5e7, D1...13,SXR3 @ 2e7:
- 025: D14...20,SXR3 @ 2e6. All channels ok
- 026: D14...20,SXR3 @ 1e6. All channels ok, amplitude of D19,SXR3 signal about half of the amplitude in shot 025
- 027: D14...20,SXR3 @ 5e6. All channels ok, amplitude of D19,SXR3 signal about five times the amplitude in shot 026
- Then the TLA and iso-amp of D19,SXR3 are working, so it is only the encoder. Other shots to test the same channel but also with e5 and e7:
- 028,029: D14...20,SXR3 @ 1e7. All channels ok. 028 is only a test but should not be considered; 029 is the reference one
- 030: D14...20,SXR3 @ 2e7. All channels ok, amplitude is twice of 029
- 031: D14...20,SXR3 @ 5e7. All channels ok, amplitude is 5 times of 029
- 032: D14...20,SXR3 @ 5e5. All channels ok; input amplitude has been increased
- 033: D14...20,SXR3 @ 2e5. All channels ok, amplitude is that of 032 divided by 2.5
- 034: D14...20,SXR3 @ 1e5. All channels ok, amplitude if that of 032 divided by 5
- Function generator disconnected and cable from diode connected back to the input of TLA D19,SXR3. Test shot:
- 035: all diodes of all probes @ 5e7. All channels working
- After that shot the SXR_TOMO pulsefile has been switched off. Electronics is all on
3 apr 2006
- 550kA, ppcd shots. Probes inserted from shot 1060403005, acquisition on from 006. All channels @ 5e7 at the beginning.
- All probes have good signals, SXR2 is a little bit noisy but data have been obtained for almost all diodes.
- Nice examples are shots:
- 019, 565kA, without ppcd (only SXR1 and SXR2)
- 030, ppcd, first data from all channels, a few are saturated
- 044...047 and 050,051, very high sxr flux, good signals. In particular 050 seems the highest sxr flux ever recorded. Not all are qsh shot, and not all qsh shots have rotating modes, or modes rotate until the beginning of ppcd
- 057,058,060,064, in particular 069, 072 and in particular 073, 075 are other examples
- Analysis of data will be not easy, due to noise in a few channels, but is ongoing work
6 apr 2006
- Checked the SXR2 isoamps: all are working fine, including D11, then D1 now uses idoamp 1 and D11 uses isoamp D11 (switched back the IN and OUT cables of D1 and D11,SXR2 isoamps). Dummy shots are 1060406001...014.
- From shot 1060406015 the time window of SXR tomography is from -5 to 80 ms (before it was -5...100 ms). Also, the "startidx" value in the TR1612 device has been set to 0 (before it was 1, so that the first sample was lost).
9 apr 2006
- 550kA, with and without ppcd shots. Probes inserted from shot 1060409001, acquisition on from 001.
- All probes have good signals, SXR2 is a little bit noisy but data have been obtained for almost all diodes.
- Nice examples are shots:
- 040...046, ppcd, MH or "small" QSH
- 057...074, ppcd, MH and QSH. In particular 062 have big signals, with saturation in several channels; Be1 has 437 (a.u.)
- Shot 001...015, 033...039, 048...06 and 075...081 are not ppcd
- Shot 082...100 are "single pulse" ppcd, and a few are shallow F or F=0
18 apr 2006
- Another 550kA, with and without ppcd shots. Probes inserted from shot 1060418001, acquisition on from 001.
- Output BNCs of isoamps of D8 and D13,SXR2 were switched, and that's why the SXR2 profiles looked strange. Cable switched back in correct configuration from shot 001. This could has been made on 6 apr when the isoamp box was disconncted. Added a patch in the software to take into account of the mistake, valid from shot 1060406001 to the last shot of 1060417. Scopes do not switch the signals so look careful at the data.
- All probes have good signals, SXR2 is a little bit noisy but data have been obtained for almost all diodes.
- Nice examples are shots:
- 030, 031, 034, 036, 044, 045, 049, 054, 056, 058, 060, 065, 067, 070...073, 077, 079, 083, 088, 092, 094, 095, 097...099 are good ppcd, MH or QSH. 083, 095 and 098 are good rotating qsh in ppcd
- 077 and 082 have particularly signals, with saturation in several channels; Be1 has 825 (a.u.) in shot 082
- Shot 001...020, and 100 are not ppcd
19 apr 2006
- Second day of 550kA, with and without ppcd shots. Probes inserted from shot 1060419001, acquisition on from 004. The firsat shots are dummy shots.
- All probes have good signals, SXR2 is a little bit noisy but data have been obtained for almost all diodes.
- 1060419016 to 083 are ppcd. Before 016 there are standard shots, after 083 there are standard with F=0 or F>0 shots
- Nice examples are shots:
- 044 (QSH m=1,n=6,7), 063 (QSH m=1,n=6), 069 (QSH m=1,n=7), 076,081 (MH)
- From shot 084 the probes have been extracted, valves closed and acquisition has been turned off
20 apr 2006
- Calibration of the sxr tomography electronics. D10,SXR1 is the reference. Then the diodes 10,SXR2, 11,SXR3 and 11,SXR4 have been used. The gains of the past days campaigns have been calibrated.
- Discussion with B.Chapman about the possibility to modify the SXR2 probe from fixed to moveable. Maybe this is possible using a small valve connected directly to the porthole (without the CF-KF DN40 adapter)
26 apr 2006
22 and 23 may 2006
- 515kA pellets on PPCD shots. SXR tomography inserted, two-foil configuration, all channels working fine
22 aug 2006
- 520kA PPCD shots, SXR tomography inserted, two-foil configuration
7 and 8 sep 2006
- 500-550kA PPCD shots, SXR tomography inserted, two-foil configuration
13 sep 2006
14 sep 2006
- 1060914002-024 are test shots ("dummy" shots) to check that all channels, amplifiers, encoders etc are working. D2,SXR4 is not working, all the remaining channels are ok
18 sep 2006
- 500-520kA PPCD shots for QSH studies with Thomson scattering. SXR tomography inserted, two-foil configuration
20 sep 2006
- 1060920001-012 are "dummy" shot to find out what is not working on D2,SXR4. Diode, cables, TLA, encoder and iso-amp work properly, the digitizer remains to be checked
21 sep 2006
- 1060921001-017 additional tests on D2,SXR4. It seems that the digitizer input of that diode is broken. This is input 8 of digitizer #4 (this input is labelled as "7" in the digitizer panel since these lables start at 0, while in the pulsefile they are numbered from 1 to 16). Check shots 016 and 017: in 016 the digitizer inputs of D2 and D3,SXR4 are switched and D3,SXR4 is not working
25 sep 2006
- Vent of MST. 1060925001-008 are test shots to solve the D2,SXR4 problem. From shot 1060925005 the digitizer inputs of diodes D2 and D3,SXR4 have been switched. It was planned to switch diodes 1 and 2 but instead D2 and D3 have been changed by mistake
5 oct 2006
9 oct 2006
- 510kA PPCD shots. SXR tomography inserted, two-foil configuration.
- In the beginning a few tests of the electronics of diodes 7,8,9,12,13,SXR1 and D7,8,9,11,13,SXR2 (shot 1061009001-013). A function generator with a divider 0.51Mohm has been used as input of the TLA; triangular function, 0.7Vpp, 200Hz. This test worked only for SXR1, for SXR2 the cable used to connect the generator to the TLA was wrong. All electronics are fine
- D19,SXR4 electronics is not working properly, then the lemo connectors of diodes 19 and 20,SXR4 have been switched on the flange
- iso-amps of diodes 11 and 20,SXR2 switched. Gain 2x of iso-amp of D11,SXR2 is not working (it is always 1x)
- Shots are from 1061009014 up to 107. Shots 032 to 107 are PPCD. Nice examples are 040,046,066,084,092 and 093 (QSH m=1,n=6, rotating), 051 (QSH m=1,n=7), 044,077 (MH)
11 oct 2006
- SXR1,SXR3,SXR4 disconnected from MST. Be foils replaced, 15 microns installed (the same used in september 2005). Insertion system of all manipulators has been cleaned. SXR4 bushing repaired. Inner cables of all probes checked, no problems found. A new flange, new socket and new inner cables for SXR1 have been prepared, to be installed soon
12 oct 2006
- SXR1,SXR3,SXR4 installed on MST. Vacuum ok. Modified the roughing line of the tomography, now the three probes are pumped using only one line from the main tree
13 oct 2006
- 400kA standard, F=0 and PPCD shots, SXR tomography inserted, 15 um on SXR1,SXR3,SXR4, 303 um on SXR2.
- shots 1061013001-043 are 400kA F=0 (020,032,037,042 are good examples)
- 044-053 are 400kA standard
- 054-089 are 400kA PPCD (059,084 (MH), 063,074,082,086 (QSH m=1,n=6)). From shot 066 digitizer inputs of diodes 2 and 3,SXR4 have been switched back and the inputs of D1 and 2,SXR4 have been switched
- 090-102 are 400kA standard
- density control was difficult throughout the day
- At the end of the day checked the electronics of a few diodes of SXR1 and SXR2 (using a function generator and a divider). All the outputs seems the same, with gain 1,2,5e6,7. There should be no differences in the electronics of all the channels of the tomography
14 oct 2006
- SXR tomography inserted, 15 um on SXR1,3,4, 303 um on SXR2.
- shots 1061014001 up to 205 are calibration shots for gain 1,2,5e5 and 1,2e6 of SXR1...4 probes
- shots 206-232 are 400kA standard, but not very usable due to bad density control
18 and 19 oct 2006
- SXR1,SXR3 and SXR4 disconnected from MST:
- SXR1. Replaced the Be foil with the previous 303 microns. Replaced the inner cables and the flange, now also this probe has bipolar Lemo feedthroughs and connectors. The grounding of SXR1 is the same as the remaining probes: all shields of diodes 1...10 are shorted and connected to the pin 1 of the array (common anode) and to the near socket screw (and then shorted to MST); all shields of diodes 11...20 are shorted and connected to pin 12 (common anode) and to the near socket screw. Internal led installed; optimal voltage is 200Hz, 3.8V offset, 3.0Vpp amplitude, with TLA all set to 1e7. Probe and cables checked, everything is ok.
- SXR3. Replaced the Be foil with the previous 761 microns. Internal led installed, optimal voltage is 200Hz, 3.8V offset, 2.0Vpp amplitude, with TLA all set to 1e7. Diode 9 of this probe stopped to work, thus the IRD array has been replaced with a new one. Everything is ok.
- SXR4. Replaced the Be foil with the previous 761 microns. Internal led installed, optimal voltage is 200Hz, 3.8V offset, 2.0Vpp amplitude, with TLA all set to 1e7. Everything is ok.
- Repaired the insertion/extraction system of the three probes; a new self-locking washer has been installed.
- SXR1 leak tested, everything is ok.
- SXR1,SXR3 and SXR4 manipulators installed in MST. Rough pumped, after two hours rough pressure was 10 mTorr.
- A few test shots to check the electronics and the connections: 1061019022. All diodes are ok; D1,SXR4 has no signal because it is using the broken channel of the digitizer TR1612 #4.
24 oct 2006
- Test of the internal led for SXR1,3 and SXR4. Test shots:
- 1061024002: led on SXR1. All diodes and internal cables ok
- 003-008: led on SXR4. All diodes and internal cables ok. In order to have the signal also for D1,SXR4 this channel has been connected to input 16 of the digitizer TR1612 #5. The input 8 of the TR1612 #4 has been switched off. Valid from shot 1061024008
- 009-011: led on SXR3. All diodes and internal cables ok
- 012: no led. All channels ok
- Test of a new type of amplifier with remote control of gain. Connected to D10,SXR1. SXR1 inserted at 124 mm. Test shot with and without plasma:
- 056-059: dummy shot. D10,SXR1 seems ok. The encoder of this channel has been disconnected. Gain=1e7=10 x 1e6
- 060-091: plasma shot but low current and high density, no SXR signals. This amplifier should be tested again with better plasmas. After that shot the original TLA has been reconnected to the D10,SXR1
- The SXR tomography has been left in this configuration:
- two-foil, 303 microns for SXR1,SXR2, 761 microns for SXR3,SXR4
- probe extracted, VAT valves not fully closed
- gains are 5e7 for all diodes of SXR1 and SXR2, 1e7 for all diodes of SXR3 and SXR4
- iso-amps of D11 and D20,SXR2 have been switched (original iso-amp of D11,SXR2 does not work with 2x, it stays 1x)
- D2,SXR4 is stored on input 16 of the digitizer TR1612 #5. Input 8 of TR1612 #4 is off and is not working
- lemo connectors of D19 and D20,SXR4 have been switched on the flange of the probe. There is something not working in the electronics of D19,SXR4, so it is better to put it on D20 that, at the moment, can not be used

- Two shots to check electronics: 1061025005 and 006. All channels ok. D20,SXR4, that use original D19,SXR4 electronics, is a little bit noisy but this is ok
